This is a Discussion Board Question for Interpretation of Laboratory Results.
A 35-year-old male patient came to the medical office with complaints of being weak, lethargic, and unable to focus on tasks. The health care provider assessed the symptoms and ordered a hemoglobin and hematocrit test to be performed. The results were hgb 12.3 g/dl and Hct 38%. Based on the result, the physician ordered another blood draw for iron studies. 1.     What disorder was indicated by the results? 2.     Why did the physician order the iron studies?

So I’m not a doctor (yet) but I’m thinking maybe Iron Deficiency Anemia

Iron is important in RBC production, so if hemoglobin and hematocrit are a little low for men his age, then it signals for a iron test to make sure blood composition is fine, and iron level is not too low.
Possible deficiency in iron due to diet but maybe some genetic mutation could cause it?

Please tell me the answer and explain so I understand.
